Dammit, foiled again :mozilla_yell:

On the subject of crashing, in trying to get GTA IV online for multiplayer, I managed to let my GFWL update Fallout 3 to the latest patch, hope that does not cause any problems with the game or mods!!!

Turns out I was using an offline GFWL account (didn't know they existed!!) for Fallout 3 and GTA IV, so that is why I had not got any achievements in F3 (not that I care about them).

Balious - The hour thing is quite a common one from the forums I read when trying to sort my crashes out. Seems there is probably a memory leak, hopefully it will get fixed soon. Main thing is you can still play the game, and it loads real quick!!

Thanks for telling me that eggchen. I was thinking it had something to do with my computer as it always used to crash on me before i rebuilt it with the same things (i seriously needed to do it and still need the parts to play fallout 3 on full settings).

Re ROT13: You can use this as the location for a bookmark you create -- call it something memorable like Rot13:
Code: Select all
javascript:var coding = %22abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLM%22; function rot13(t) { for (var r = %22%22,i=0;i<t.length;i++) { character = t.charAt(i); position = coding.indexOf(character); if (position > -1) character = coding.charAt(position + 13); r += character; } return r; } S=window.getSelection(); function t(N) { return N.nodeType == N.TEXT_NODE; } function r(N) { if (t(N)) N.data = rot13(N.data); } for (j=0;j<S.rangeCount;++j) { var g=S.getRangeAt(j), e=g.startContainer, f=g.endContainer, E=g.startOffset, F=g.endOffset, m=(e==f); if(!m||!t(e)) { /* rot13 each text node between e and f, not including e and f. */ q=document.createTreeWalker(g.commonAncestorContainer, NodeFilter.SHOW_ELEMENT | NodeFilter.SHOW_TEXT, null, false); q.currentNode=e; for(N=q.nextNode(); N && N != f; N = q.nextNode()) r(N); } if (t(f)) f.splitText(F); if (!m) r(f); if (t(e)) { r(k=e.splitText(E)); if(m)f=k; e=k;} if (t(f)) g.setEnd(f,f.data.length); } void 0

All I have to do in Firefox is select the ROT13 text on the displayed web page and then select the bookmark to convert it. Credit goes to someone on an Ars Technica forum, but they in turn got it from someone else...

I'm lost Nat. I have a bookmark that takes me to the Rot13 site where I copy and paste to get my cypher. How do I use this code?

You'll need to create a new bookmark.

First copy the Rot13 Javascript text verbatim from the code block above to the clipboard of your OS (should work in your Linux GUI as well as Windows).

Then make a new bookmark in your browser. You can do that in Firefox by 1) right-clicking on the bookmark toolbar and selecting "New Bookmark...". Or 2) you can select Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks... or Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks... (depending on the version of Firefox). Select the bookmark menu (looks like a directory) where you want the bookmark. Within that menu, right-click and select "New Bookmark...". (You can move the new bookmark later if desired.)

When you select "New Bookmark...", you'll see a new dialog, with Name and Location as well as other stuff that's optional. Put in a name like "Quick Rot13" in the Name field. Then tab to the Location field or select it. Paste the clipboard contents you copied earlier into the field. Save.

To use it, just select the Rot13 text in the browser and then click your new link in the Bookmark toolbar or menu. It will automatically convert the displayed text in situ for you.

It won't work in edit boxes, but it is very convenient for viewing pages with Rot13 text, as you never have to leave the page to convert it.

Edit: Tip: You can convert your previewed post's text for copy/pasting into your edit box, to save a trip to the rot13.com site.

Edit 2: Tip: Notepad++ users: You can use TextFX > TextFx Convert > ROT13 Text.

There are mods that completely disable VATS, and remove autoaim. I only use the second one as I do like VATS, it gives you some nice death shots!!

It could be made into more of an FPS, and even more Stalker in feel. So many new guns are already being added, but it would take a combat overhaul to make it a true FPS. NPC's and mutants just take too much damage.

There are some things I have already done to make it more my kind of game.

- Faster running when holster weapons, so you effectively sprint through this method.
- Alcohol removes small amounts of rads.
- Far less ammo and meds in loot.

One trick to make it feel better, change the Field of View to 90, Fallout 3 uses 75 and most FPS games use 90.

Find Fallout.ini in your Username/My Documents/My Games/Fallout 3 folder (that is the location in Vista).

Add this line to the end of the [Display] section :

fDefaultWorldFOV=90.0

If you want to see the difference in game you can use fov 90 in the console, but that is only temporary and can screw up the position of your weapons in first person. Use the console to see if you like the feel of the game better and then write it to your Fallout 3.ini if you want it permanent (the weapons will go back to normal if you do this).

Field of View is weird, the minute I changed it to 90 I found myself able to move around the world easier, and track enemies with the cursor much better. I used to jump too late and I think its because the camera is effectively in front of the characters head with a fov of 75. I found simple things like running round corners just "felt" better after I changed this.

Thanks Egg....that does seem nicer. In my Fallout.ini, it was called fDefaultFOV=75.0000 I didn't actually find fDefaultWorldFOV

No worries, I got it from tweakguides.

Update: It has been discovered that by inserting the line fDefaultWorldFOV=75.0 at the bottom of the Display section of the Fallout.ini file, and assigning it a value equal to the FOV you want, you can now permanently change the default Field of View in the game. Remember however that if you change the default FOV, you may also need to change the FOV for other screen elements - see the fRenderedTerminalFOV and fPipboy1stPersonFOV commands below (Fallout.ini).

My Fallout.ini also has the variable you mention, but I think the key is you insert the line stated on tweakguides at the end of the [display] section, so it overwrites the earlier one. The end of my display section looks like this.

iMaxAnisotropy=8
fLandLOFadeSeconds=15.0
fDefaultWorldFOV=90.0

Just to be clear that is a new line altogether, it was not in my original .ini file.

Would not hurt having them both at 90 I suppose :thumbright:
It definitely make the game "feel" better.

PS. I hear the tweakguides guy is no longer writing guides for new games, it is a sad day indeed.

Even with all the mods in the world to make fallout 3 perfect I can say this and im sure I speak for most people that enjoyed fallout 2. Fallout 3 will never be as good as Fallout 2. And maybe Fallout 1 but I never played that one so can't say anything about it.

VATS reminds me of Fallout 2 & 1 due to the AP system it has when in combat and it takes AP to use VATS and that looks quite good with the death scenes it does.

Anyone here that played the first fallout games agree with me on this? Unless of course the RPG/FPS type game like STALKER & Oblivion are your type of thing then of course Fallout 3 be a very good game for you. But I just think Fallout 2 is better even though I suck at them type of games.

Never played 1 or 2!!

I do love F3 though, the wasteland has a great atmosphere to it and VATS is great, if only for those gruesome moments. Well, I wanted more RPG elements from Stalker, so yeah I guess that is why I like F3.

I think with mods it could be even better, but don't want to make anyone think that vanilla F3 really needs many changes, it is very good as it is.

Agreed with what Jam said. And if you do enjoy them then Jagged Alliance 2 is a little similar to them and may be liked but its a completely different game needing lots of tactics. But still 1 and 2 are reccommanded to play.

For everyone! 1 & 2 are great games to play and are a must if you like turn-based sort of like games.

I have a huge confession to make....

I first got into PC gaming way back when magazines used to print code you would type in to make your own game!! I was a very young lad and had no money to buy my own games.... shortly after, I was given a console as a present, and my PC gaming had a huge 10 year hole in it right up until I flew the nest, got my own place, and decided I needed a PC again.

There are many classic games that I have never played..... X-Com series, Deus Ex, Fallouts, many more I probably don't even know about!!

Yep, I was a console boy, and I used to say things like "Well there is no messing around getting console games working, you just plug it in and go.... no boot disks to free up Ram, no minimum requirements...."

I was lost, now I'm found.....

I played the second Deus Ex for about 10 minutes... then uninstalled it.

While I know I should play these games, I am a graphics whore, and cannot get into them now, should have played them at the time!!

I understand I have dropped from my lofty perch!! It was a dark time in my life when I was a console boy, just could not afford the latest PC hardware at that time...

I see, for me games are about Gameplay and not Graphics, plain and simple, thats how everyone should be, more intrested in the game itself, than how it looks. :)
