How easy/difficult is it for a foreigner currently to set up shop in Britain for an indeterminate period of time?

there are differences of status in respect of a "foreigner" as far as immigration controls are concerned. Simply, does this "foreigner" person already has any kind of immigration status in Britain -visa of any sort (restricted or not,or indefinite, etc) - or are they coming straight from a foreign country to Britain wishing to open a business here?

You need to give more information on what this "foreigner status" actually stands for, so I'll get back to you.

Straight from a foreign country to just live and work(no actual business set-up meant) there for some time and if nothing major were to happen to tie them down more permanently or change of mind, most likely be gone a few years later.

On a business oriented move to Britain, though, a person who wishes to make this move should apply to the British Consulate that exists in their own country with an application to open/establish and conduct such business in Britain. Coming to the UK border without obtaining a proper visa will almost certainly result with refusal of entry.
Documentation required and the ease of the application path, as far as I would guess, would be at least marginally different to each country from where such an application were to be made. British Consulate in that country would advise the applicants in detail in this respect. But I would guess that the availability of reasonably acceptable amount of funds for the proposed business venture would be an important factor as well.

Perhaps. But in any case, as mentioned, rather a extra pair of helping hands in some place more quiet, not quite a peoples person, least as far as busy, daily face to face contact is concerned.

Preliminary search would suggest that I would not need a visa to enter though would have to register my stay to request residency and apply for work.
That more or less covers the legal side, some more details to ask over from the local consulate. Aside that what also interests me is the social side, actually finding a place to stay and work, peoples attitude and all that.

Long distance for a year or two to catch up on bills then look for regional or local. At least I'll have options. More than I can say right now cause nobody wants to hire me

Long distance can be a tall order, long time away from family and friends not to mention the long driving hours but it does indeed pay rather well. On the other hand you can see the country and perhaps meet new people, also truck drivers in general are ,more or less, a pretty neat bunch when it comes to life on the road, though an exaggeration "Smokey and the Bandit" was not entirely off the mark in how they regard each other. Do not know about the States but here in Europe the drivers are supposed to rest every now and then, so you can relax a bit as well.

I'd go for the long haul myself as well. At least for some time until I miss city roads again. Hard job of course, but at least no irritating colleagues next to you all the time. If I had a truck license, I'd try it, too.

Although, do not quote me on the, what I suppose could be called the "Trucker Code", as it was one trip alongside my old man rather long time ago. That however brings me to another point, depending on how large the interior is, you could also take your significant other along with you.
